Group 1: Daily Reflection-Day 1 (31/10/10)

My first impression of Siem Reap

The airport seems unique appearing to be more like a resort hotel rather than a airport. Even though there were air-conditioner installed the airport, it was even colder due to the morning breeze and the opened entrance of the airport. The facilities there were similar to the ones in Singapore however, the design of the airport seems to be very traditional filled with statues of Hindus god. I learned that the statues were made from sandstone, popular during the Angkor period, which appears to be red in colour. One thing we observed is that the Siem Reap City seems to be a undeveloped city. This is because the building there were all two storey shophouses and the people there seems to be living in their own pace and yet work very hard for their own living. On the way around, we saw buffaloes and mistook it as cows and was embrassed by the tour guide. The roads were also very uneven casuing the bus to go bumpy almost everytime.

The silk farm:
The silk worm farm is very different from singapore as we always thought that silk is easily produced. However, after witnessing the process of producing silk, i realised that the making of silk is very tedious. It is amazing to know that silk comes from worms. but the process is very disgusting. They actually boiled the pupua and it is kind of cruel. I will spread this knowledge to everyone, to tell them that silk is hard to produce and we should cherish it.

The Primary School
My first impression of the school was that it was not as badly done up as i had thought. It was actually quite decent except for the lsck of toilets and the state of the classrooms. The classrooms were located in small cramped spaces and some of the table and benches were even broken. As for the toilets, the room was too dark and eerie with a bucket of water for u to flush. This is very unhygenic, and can lead to diseases such as malaria.

Reflection (first day)

Hellos. :) Group 5 here !
Our reflections for day 1. :)

Within the airport - When we first stepped out of the plane, it was chilly & cold. It was not as hot as we expected despite having its dry season now. It was not as complicating as Singapore Changi airport as the terminal was very small and there was also alot of statues, this shows that it was rich in religious culture.

Siem Reap City - The ttraffic in the city is very not organised. They did not have many traffic light, which caused them to get into each other's way and led to traffic congestion. They did not have many road lanes and roads are very long, in which cows are also seen in the roads which cars travelled in. But still, the regular practise of the Red Cross students did amazed many of us, as the roads are well controlled under two students which aged around us.

Silk Worm Farm - Having to go to the silk worm farm, we were able to learn the process of silk being produced and see it with our own eyes. We were able to know the amount of silk produced required large human labour. We learnt that the people had to work very hard, just to earn a simple living.

Primary School - We learnt that we should not take things for granted. This is because in that primary school, they only got three toilets to share among nearly 400 students. Whenever it rains, it will also caused the inner to be wet. Also, a normal classroom size had to contain around 80 students, which hardly allow the students to have freedom to move around. They also did not have lockers, lights, fans, whiteboard etc. Although most students would need those things, they was not able to own it. Thus, we should learn to be more adaptable. Also, they usually walk to school instead of us singaporeans taking buses or cars and even taxis.

Day 1, (team 2)

Reflection for Day 1.

- I was really excited in going to cambodia! We took an airplane flight at 6am. Jetstar Airlines was really cramped however soon we reached the Cambodia in two hours time. Prior to this trip, my first impression of Cambodia was hot and humid. But to my surprised today the weather was cooling! The temperature was only 19 Degrees. While we were on the bus, on the way to have our breakfast, the people at cambodia were really friendly as they waved at us, even though we were inside the bus and do not know each other.

Sheril.

- After that, we had buffet breakfast at a muslim cafe. we had nasi lemak, prata, egg and sandwiches. Among this we enjoy prata most. Before we onboard the bus, a small boy came up to us and beg for money. We refuse to give the boy money as we heed our teachers advice.

Zaki.

-  After breakfast, we proceed to the silkworm farm. At the farm,we learnt  the process of producing silk from the silkworm. It was a eye-opening and enriching experience as we didn'"t know so much work are involve in producing the silk. After that,we were given opportunity to buy the silk product but none of us in our group bought anything as the products were expensive to us.

Samuel.

- My first impression of the school that it is quite spacious and not very run down. We are there to do a few things for the school - paint a mural wall, build an incinerator, and to complete the toilet that is under construction. I helped out at both building the incinerator and the toilet. Although it was hard to work under the scorching Sun, all of us continued to perservere to finish up the work. We did our best to build everything we can today and leave the rest for tomorrow to complete. We had so much fun cemeting the bricks together and had worked very well as a team. I look forward to see the final product of the incinerator, toilet and the mural wall.

Group 3 - Reflection Day 1 :D

My First Impression of Siem Reap (within the Airport)
When we just arrived the airport , my first impression was that the weather is very cooling unlike Singapore .
It was indeed a very different place compared to Singapore. Its just, very calm and peaceful. Unlike singapore- Facing a busy lifestyle. Though their Airport isn't as nice and grand as Singapore. Its still considered a very nice place (:

My Second Impression of Siem Reap (within Siem Reap City)
The streets are filled with more motorcycle than cars. With is not like Singapore with has more cars then motorcycle. And even though it was the city, it was quite as windy as at the airport. And the people there were very friendly as they smiled at us as we pass by them. But it was not very clean as Singapore. They do not have rubbish bin like Singapore for its people to throw rubbish. Not only that, the water is not really as clean like Singapore. Hence, my impression of Siem Reap is not as very clean and hygenic country (:

Silk Worm Farm
The Silk Worm Farm didn't smell very good , however it was an interesting experience for us :D
W found out that the farm needs much human labour to produce the silk and cotton . We have never seen the process of making silk and a silk worm before . We saw the making , dying , processing of the silk . We also found out many steps of making the silk . For example , the drying of the cocoon in the hot sun after the moth has escaped and the mating of the Silk Worm Moths (Eat . Sleep . Make Love . Die ) - Said by the guide in the farm .

School
We believe that we had made an impact in the school by building another toilet , building an incinerator and painting the walls of the classroom . Our first impression of the school was that it has a very big area but very small classrooms which has a maximum capacity of around 60 students . The furnitures in the classrooms cannot be compared to those that we have in Singapore as they are old . Its not a very well developed country as the toilet has no proper system of disposal and has no electricity . The school is very unhygeinic as there are litter everywhere and by building the incinerator we hope to reduce the land poullution . We learnt how to mix cement , how to lay the bricks and painting the walls . With the help of the Cambodians , we were able to complete our goal for day even faster . The water used to wash off the paints were then directed to the river which was very close to the paddy fields . There were fishes living in there , which could kill them and cause air poullution .

Group 6 reflection day 1

My first impression of Siem Reap (within the airport) :D
My first of Siem Reap is that the contry is not well developed as singapore. There is only one terminal in the airport. I feel that though Cambodia is a not so developed country the airport was well build and decorated. The toilets in the airport are well cleaned and for a country like Cambodia i shall say that it was good. I also felt a very cool breeze as i steped out of the aircraft. I did not think that Cambodia would have such cool breeze and i was very surprised.
-Abdul Halim(leader)

My first impression of Siem Reap (within Siem Reap City)
My second inpression of Siem Reap within Siem Reap City was that it was very busy and bustling with people. Tourists, locals were going about doing their own business. There were also a lot of motorcyclists in Siem Reap, which I thought was greatly influenced by their neighbouring countries, Thailand and Laos. Another thing that I had noticed about Siem Reap was that there was a lot of honking around, which implies that the roads of Siem Reap is VERY dangerous. Apparently, if you are a driver in Siem Reap but did not honk at least every five seconds, you are invisable to the other drivers.......
- Elaine Goh

The silk worm farm:D
After we eat the our breakfast,we went to the silk worm farm.Over there, we learnt about the silk worms, their stages growth. The people there kill 85% of the silk worm pupa to get its silk. It help me know the different stages of the silk worm and how the silk is created. I will then appreciate anything that is make from silk from now then. It is a really fun experience for me.
- Winston and Anthea

The Primany School (My first Impression)
My first impression of the primany school is that the school is very run down. There's litter everywhere. The children will throw their litters everywhere because they don't have a proper rubbish bin to throw their litter. The classrooms were very dark and it's difficult for them to study. The desk are quite small. They are only 2 toilet in the school which make it very inconvenient for the student. We will help to make their school condition better.

Group 4 reflection on Day 1

hi all , we touched down in siem reap at around 0700... We didn't really expect the weather to be so cold >~< The air stewardess said it was 19 degrees outside. SO COLD! We entered the immigrations area and queued for a really really long time to reach to the immigrations person( We were all like " OMGsh... So scary DX), the dude speaked in Cambodia's main language, Khmer, i (Nigel) didn't really understand what he was saying... After that we entered the bus and we were on our way to the breakfast area, WE WERE SO HUNGRY!!!!!!!!!!!!! We had Nasi Lemak With tea which tasted like Coloured Sugared water...

After breakfast, we went in a bus tour around Siem Reap City and a tour guide was explaining the historical landmarks in Siem Reap and its history! There were many hotels in Siem Reap City! Most of them are new built hotels and they were amazingly big and beautiful! :D There are very less cars but alot of bicycles and motorcycles could be seen on the road! (: Public transport such as buses, taxis and MRTs are not present in Siem Reap.. :/ People travel by feet or by bike. I ( WenXuan) also saw many kampong houses which were bulit on stilts! :D Thats COOL~ ^^ There were MANY crops all around! (: We saw water buffalos and cows on the fields~ *MOO~* Many of the houses are run down too! There are also many hungry and homeless stray dogs wandering around on the streets :( SAD!! :/

After that, we went to the Silk Worm Farm. This was my(Liyana) first time seeing this. To me, it is a disguisting process. Now, after seeing how they made this silk, i know that it is a hard job for these women as the process and procedure needs a lot of patience and time. The worms were wriggling in the basket filled with leaves which made me feel really disgusted. But,although they have to go through all these procedure, the ending result was marvellous, joyful and meaningful ((:

After vsiting to the silk worm farm, we went to the Krobei Primary School... The road was irritatingly bumpy, but we some how enjoyed it =.=" When I(Hui Yu) saw the school, i expected the school to be runned down, but it turned out to be really nice. We entered one of the school's classroom which was about half of our school's classroom, PLUS+!!!!!!!!!!!! IT HAS NO LIGHTS AND FANS! T.T We ate a packet lunch at the class room, than we were assigned the task to paint the walls outside the classroom, IT WAS BLUE! There were many spiders there, its egg was even more disgusting... It was like a small ball with spiky stuffs outside, like a puffer fish... YUCK! It was really tiring the whole day, but it was well the effort, and I had appreciated how well conditioned our school's classroom in singapore is so CLEAN and GREEN.
